This is a custom hand-wired loaded pickguard for a Strat-style electric guitar, with Dimarzio pickups.
It features a three-humbucker (HHH) configuration and nearly endless tonal possibilities, which are dialed in through use of the five-way pickup selector switch, volume/tone pots, and four mini switches.
The humbuckers are as follows: vintage Dimarzio PAF Pro (neck position, about 9.
5 kohms), vintage Dimarzio PAF Pro (middle position, about 9.
5 kohms), Dimarzio X2N (bridge position, about 16.
5 kohms).
The vintage pickups likely date back to the 80's/90's.
The pots (volume and two tones) and Bourns mini-pots (500 kohms).
The tone pots share a quality 0.
047 uf orange drop capacitor.
Unlike standard Strat wiring, the bridge pickup is controlled by the second tone pot (standard Strat wiring has no tone control on the bridge pickup).
The pickups are selected with a genuine Fender five-way selector switch.
There are four mini toggle switches.
These perform the following functions: -- First mini switch (nearest the volume pot): this is a phase switch wired to the bridge pickup.
When engaged, the bridge pickup is out-of-phase with any other pickup(s) it is in combination with.
This provides a great variety of out-of-phase tones.
Out-of-phase tones are excellent for cutting leads, sweet blues tones, and pitch harmonics.
The phase switch also serves a second function.
When the bridge pickup is operating in single coil mode with the phase switch engaged, the coil nearest the bridge is active.
This provides a nice twangy tone.
-- The second mini switch allows for pickup combinations not provided by the standard five-way selector switch.
A Strat with standard wiring and a five-way selector switch can only get five different sounds (neck pickup, neck/middle in parallel, middle, middle/bridge in parallel, bridge).
This switch allows you to play with the two missing pickup combinations: neck and bridge, and neck/middle/bridge.
All of these combinations (as well as others) may also be utilized for out-of-phase tones, with the phase switch engaged.
-- The third mini switch is pure magic.
When engaged, this switch runs the neck and middle position PAFs together in series.
While the PAFs, when played alone, have a dulcet sort of fat single coil strat-like sound.
When these two are run together in series they work as one mega-output neck pickup that delivers an extremely hot output.
It's a perfect sound for metal rhythmic crunch or sludgey leads.
It also cleans up pretty nicely with the volume pot, for a nice dark low tone that can sound pretty sweet.
Running the neck and middle pickups together in series has an entirely different, and much more powerful, sound than running them together in parallel through the second position of the five-way selector switch.
Using this switch also allows you to use the middle position on the five-way switch as a kill switch, for cool sputtering sounds.
-- The fourth mini switch allows you to use the bridge humbucker in single coil modes.
The Dimarzio X2N is a very powerful ceramic pickup, and, though it is great for blistering rhythm and leads, it can seem a bit out of place when you are playing more gently/melodically, switching back and forth between the PAFs and the X2N.
So, when you want to get a more gentle tone/output from this pickup, you can use this switch to get softer single coil tones.
When the X2N is split in half, it can be a bit twangy.
To fill that sound out a little more, for a little more depth/warmth, I wired a resistor to this switch, which allows part of the split-off coil to be activated along with the primary coil engaged.
When this switch is engaged (without the phase switch engaged) it uses the coil of the X2N that is farther from the bridge.
This has a nice thicker single coil tone to it.
When the phase switch is engaged along with this coil-split switch, the X2N coil nearest the bridge is engaged.
This has a more twangy Telecaster-like sound to it.
That does it for the description of the various switches.
I once tried to count all the different tones this wiring is capable of, and I think it's somewhere around thirty different sounds.
There's nothing you can't play with it.
It can take a little while to get used to thefunctions of all the switches/combinations-- but once you do, it becomes second nature and is awesome! The pickguard itself is a three-ply PVC pickguard.
Nice and thick.
It is shielded with aluminum tape, so there is no buzzing/humming (so long as your guitar's cavity is also shielded).
I designed and wired this myself.
I've played with this in one of my own guitars and love it.
So, the pickguard does have some pick scuffing-- for those of you into the "reliced" look.
The neck and middle PAF Pros are also encased in brushed nickel open face pickup rings.
They look cool and protect the pickups.
This listing is for the loaded pickguard only-- not a full guitar.
Please note: some guitar bodes may need to be routed out to make space for the neck and/or middle humbuckers.
I will cover this loaded pickguard with a warranty for one year.
If anything goes wrong with the wiring during the year following purchase (providing that you do not alter it in any way), send it back to me and I will repair it for you (this does not cover the pickups themselves).
Warranty voided if you attempt any repairs or alterations yourself.
