Description: 1960 BMW R50 47k miles
This is a first or second kick 1960 BMW R50 motorcycle that has been cosmetically and mechanically restored.
It starts reliably and is typically BMW quiet and smooth running.
The motorcycle was purchased in running condition with an attached sidecar from Tacoma BMW in the fall of 1990 and until last summer had not been started.
It was cosmetically restored in 1991 and mechanically restored in 2023.
Cosmetic Restoration
The motorcycle was cosmetically restored during the winter of 1991 and has been displayed along with the sidecar in the heated living room of my house since; both the motorcycle and the sidecar were restored.
All of the aluminum parts were removed and polished on a buffing wheel and the fasteners were replaced with stainless steel.
The chrome parts were sent out and stripped and re-chromed and polished.
All of the painted parts were stripped down to bare metal and repainted with an epoxy primer, a Dupont Imron black top coat and white hand painted pinstripes.
The brake, clutch, speedometer and throttle cables were replaced with new cables.
All of the rubber boots on the air intakes and drive line and their hose clamps are new.
The bench seat was replaced with a new Pagusa solo seat.

Mechanical Restoration
The mechanical restoration is very recent and was carried out over the summer of 2023.
The sidecar was removed and the motorcycle was configured for solo riding.
The engine was stripped down to the bare block and all parts were cleaned, inspected and replaced as necessary.
The oil slingers and all engine bearings minus the connecting rod bearings were replaced.
The pistons were fitted with new rings and wrist pins and the cylinders were honed.
The ignition system was rebuilt with a new coil, advance mechanism, points and condenser.
The spark plugs, wires and caps are all new low resistance parts.
The heads were decarbonized and the valves and seats were cleaned and lapped.
The wheel bearings, swing arm bearings and headstock bearings were cleaned and repacked.
The front and rear brakes and clutch were disassembled cleaned and inspected and found to be within the acceptable wear limits.
The carburetors were dismantled, cleaned and adjusted.
All non functioning light bulbs were replaced and a new 6volt battery
and battery box were installed.
The electrical system is fully functional as per the manual.
